  5. There is a person, who is familiar to them, telling them about how they should consider other Universities in the United States because if they don’t they will lose their semester and their time. To this, the student with the hat doesn't show agreeance and reacts by saying that “That is not in his plans.”, while the other student is thoughtful. This box represents all the negativity expressed by people and how their first speculation was the loss of time without knowing what could be done in a case like this.
  6. The classes began again in the University and the professor expresses compassion to his students and intends to give a positive vibe to the students. Insights on 10 Ways to give Writers Helpful Feedback by Diego Ruiz

Insights on 10 Ways to give Writers Helpful Feedback
  1. Having a correct understanding of the blog is the first step for any feedback. As stated in the first way to give helpful feedback “Just read the blog out loud; see what the words sound like. What is your reaction? (Write this)” . This is very helpful because many authors can write in a way of a speech. By hearing what is written, at the moment of giving feedback, you will address the correct topics.
  2. When reading, there are certain things that remain in your mind for more time than others. These parts are essential to know as an author so you can have an idea of the message you are conveying to your readers. This according to the third recommendation “Pointing”. Which indicates to “Write the words or phrases that stick in your mind. Which passages/features did you like best? Don't explain why.”
  3. A technique to address correctly the blog is to summarize it. This is another step that contributes to having a better understanding so you can give a better and correct feedback of the blog. As stated in the fourth recommendation “Summarizing”. A very straightforward way of finding this is answering these two key questions which are stated in Oasis Writing Link “What is the main point? Subordinate ones?”.
  4. Feedbacks can become monotonous or have limits within its reach, for these reason using creative techniques like metaphors can make a greater impact on the author. The eighth way is “Metaphorical Descriptions”. Examples of this technique are to describe the blog in terms of weather, clothing, colors, animals and others, as stated in Oasis Writing Link. Describe the blog in terms of weathers, clothing, colors, animals. These make the feedback more relatable, adding to make a greater impact.
  5. As you read a blog, many thoughts come up in your mind. These are as a result of what you are reading. These thoughts on your mind would be a great feedback for the author, that way the author can know what sensations the blog may be causing its readers. This is based on the recommendation #10 from Oasis Writing Link “Movies of the Mind”. This recommendation states to “Tell the writer what happens inside your head as you read the words in the blog.”.

5 Insights on Maus by Felipe

1. Descriptions
On the graphic novel all the panels were white and black. The story was placed in a lot of different places. There were mice, cats and pigs in the panels. In all the panels, these animals have clothes on. Also, they stand in two legs. The animals in the graphic novel didn't had mouth. It was just eyes and eyebrows on the mice.
2. Visual elements
The visual elements helped to create the story's meaning by the colors and the drawing techniques and objects. For example, All the story was in black and white because it could help us understood it wasn't a lovely story and that it was an old story. The technique to draw the mice and the cats were different. The drawing of the mice portrayed the mice as weak, innocent and tiny. The drawing of the cats portrayed the cats as mean, big and they had a mouth. Having a mouth could mean that they could say things to the mouse and they heard it but the mice, which didn't have a mouth, if they said anything, nobody of the cats would listen. Like what they said, didn't matter. The author used mice and cats to create a relationship of prey and predator and comparing it to Nazis and the Jews.
3. Narrative and Graphic Jumps
This graphic novel doesn't rely much on the readers ability to provide narrative information because the events between panels is very consequential. For example, in one panel, Vladek and Anja could be walking on the street, then in the next panel it shows them in front of some doors, then in the next panel it shows them opening the door, and then in the next panel it shows them inside the place. his doesn't means that it doesn't relies a little because at one time Vladek could be at the job and then in another panel he can be in a train. It relies a little bit. However, this work has narrative in boxes or below or above the panels which describes the scenes or what happened before the scene or what's happening on the scene.
4. Meaning
The meaning or purpose of this comic was to show the hard and horrible times of the holocaust. Vladek represented the Jews who survived the holocaust who didn't gave up never. Using a witness of the Holocaust, as Vladek, to tell the story was a very intelligent move because it gives credibility to the story and gives a much richer perspective to the comic. The pigs represented the persons who had nothing to do with the Nazi/Jews situations. Some of them were in favor of killing the Jews and some of them helped the Jews because they weren’t in favor of what the Nazis were doing.
5. Text and dialogues
The text in the panels have a significance too. Some of the words were in bold to give it more force to the text and emphasis to the words significance. Also, the shape of some bubbles of dialogue were different. The spiky bubbles meant that the message was told with agitation or desperation. Also, sometimes there were bubbles un a square shape. This meant that the message was told by a narrator which in this case would be Vladek because he is the one telling the story to his son. The font of the words was always the same and it fitted with the drawings because it was a simple one, and the drawings were simple too (the majority).

Grafic Fiction Story

“The Story of an Hour” Reflection
The title of this story, written by Kate Chopin, is very important because it provides a hint about the subject matter, gives a clue to the writer’s purpose. In this case, the purpose of the author is basically to entertain and intrigue the reader’s emotions. Also, the writer uses a serious tone during all the story.
This short story is about a woman, named Louise Mallard, who has a heart condition and everyone treats her very carefully because of this. When her sister and family friend discover Mr. Mallard got killed in an accident, they take time to gently tell Mrs. Mallard that her husband has died. Mrs. Mallard cries and goes to her room to be by herself and locks the door. Inside, she seems terrified of some spiritual force that's coming to her and finally realizes that it's her freedom. Even though she and her husband loved each other, and she's truly sad by his death, she feels liberated and free for the first time. While Mrs. Mallard is having this paranormal, her sister keeps trying to enter the room. Finally, Mrs. Mallard comes out of her room, and she and her sister start to go downstairs. Suddenly, the very alive Mr. Mallard comes in. When Mrs. Mallard sees him, she has a shock and dies.
The setting of this story is not mentioned and very limited. The story takes place within an hour, so there's not enough time for the characters to go anywhere or do anything. Still, it's woman that the women are always inside the Mallards' house. The atmosphere is dark and frightening because it evolves around death and also the spiritual forces that Mrs. Mallard experienced.
A very important aspect is the point of view, which is omniscient third person. The narrator can move in whatever way he/she chooses. This helps the reader to understand every emotion that the main character is experiencing and every thought coming to his mind. Though the conflict is person vs. self; in other words, Mrs. Mallard struggles with herself, with her own soul. Because of this, the point of view is very important to understand the struggles that the character faces.
This story, like all short stories, doesn’t have too much characters. The main character is Louise Mallard a very developing and dynamic character because of all she experienced while she is alone in her room, many supernaturals things that changed her and the way of seeing death, the death of her husband. The rest of the characters are Brentley Mallard, Josephine and Richards. Each one of them are basically static. Based on what the story says about all this characters they have a few characteristics that never change and are emphasized.
Finally, the most important themes are freedom and confinement. At the beginning, freedom seems like a terrible thing to Mrs. Mallard, who's restricted in lots of ways. Through her marriage, by her bad heart, and even inside her home, which she doesn't leave during the story. She can tell freedom's coming for her, and she dreads it. Once it arrives, though, it fills her with an overpowering joy. Yet, she experiences this mental and emotional freedom while being confined to a room. As soon as she leaves that room, the freedom she'd only just barely begun to understand is taken away from her.

Journal, Life Compass, and Multigenre Reflection
The writings in the journal and the life compasses have been present in my day to day since last semester. Things to which I did not see purpose at the beginning but with the passage of the days I began to see the benefits that gave me. The first days that I wrote in the journal, it was becoming very difficult for me to continue writing and concentrate for ten minutes without stopping. I couldn’t focus, always getting distracted by something and I kept thinking about other things that had nothing to do with the class. Almost always there were worries about the amount of work I had in the classes. Also, I did not see the meaning and purpose of the life compass. It seemed ridiculous to have to do a spiral many times a week and in each corner to put my emotional, mental, spiritual and physical state. On top of this, we had to summarize the four states in one paragraph.
As the days went by and I continued to write in the journal and do my life compass, I was greatly improved in many aspects. I no longer had the same difficulty of keeping writing without stopping that I had at the beginning. Each time I wrote more fluently My use of language was positively affected, I learned to use new words and make them part of my vocabulary. The life compass also served me as a daily self-evaluation and look for the causes of my mood, physical condition, etc.
In this semester we did three works in a new section of the journal, called the multigenre. In this section we did two jobs that I found very entertaining and interesting. One of them was to make a letter dedicated to my younger me. The other one was to make a metaphor of that message that you want to say to "your past". These jobs made me think about things that had changed since my youth, things that I should not have done and also made me realize the great childhood that I experienced. These kinds of activities make the students think of the luck we have had in life and how blessed we are. Finally, we filled the front and back of the notebook with images related to literature. I really liked this job because I put my creativity into practice to make a nice collage.
This projects not only helped me in aspects of writing, but it also helped me for many other things in my life. My concentration is something that has greatly improved. Since I started writing in the journal, I feel more focused when I do other jobs and do not waste as much time as I used to. Also, this helped me to release stress and anxiety, something that will be very useful for me during my studies.

Maus Reflection
The Graphic Fiction Story Maus presents a reality of the World War II in a different way that helps the reader better understand the events using techniques like personification, metaphors and citing real facts and events. The way the events are presented are different from any other I had seen or heard. The vibe that the graphic novel transmits is a different one from that of a movie and that of a textbook. Having the opportunity to present the reader with more details through graphic images in the ideal moments.
A graphic story can convey feelings in a different way than text, Maus makes a great use of this style. When the story goes developing with dialogue, certain questions appear on the readers mind. For example, when the prisoners of war are being transported to different towns throughout the story one may question “from where to where they are going?”. On page 60 the author made a map where it details the cities and territories Germany had impacted at the moment.
The dialogue in which the text is written allows a casual way of speaking, causing a casual way of understanding. One can relate their dialogue to ones that one can have with family members. The story expresses facts and history in a casual dialogue way. For example in page 45 were Vladek says “My father pulled out 14 of his teeth to escape. If you missed 12 teeth they left you go.”. This was said in the context of being part of the army and going to war. This is something I can relate to personally because of stories I have heard of people who were going to be drafted to war and did many things to avoid this. Inclusively, I had heard a similar case regarding a person’s teeth not making them eligible for war and actually pulling out his teeth before his time came.
Maus consists mostly of Vladek narrating to his son about how his life was in the war times and of their current lives. By Vladek narrating what he passed through, he would also make comments on how it was like, and the story would also present how he was in the present. This is an angle that is not seen when one sees a movie about a war because many focus on the events happening but don’t have the comments of an actual survivor throughout the events.
The use of imagery is present throughout all the story. These give evidence and more information about things being explained in the text dialogue. Like on page 90 of the story were the families were at a plaza to sign up and get their papers certified. On this page, there are two passports presented, that of Vladek and that of Anja. Both passports appear stamped, how they were supposed to be, giving evidence and an idea to the reader about how the process was in times like those.
From the story one can conclude that Vladek is a strong and persistent person, always looking for a way to live better. Even with the harsh conditions in which he was placed and with “the group” thinking of a certain way, he would believe in what he thought. On page 54, an opportunity for the prisoners of war is presented by the Germans, asking for volunteers to go work at another place were they would get more food and better housing. The first thoughts of the group was not to volunteer, they said “If we have to die, let’s die here!” (not criticizing their decision). Despite the group’s thinking, Vladek didn't agree and said “I’m not going to die and I won’t die here! I want to be treated like a human being!”. So he went off and volunteered and with him, others went. His desire to look for more, placed him in the place he is in this story, as a survivor which is something very admirable.

Maus uses many techniques to convey the message to the readers. Let it be imagery, casual dialogue and others. The correct use in the correct situations, help the author achieve the reader’s understanding of different events and situations. Making this a very impacting book, even for a person who has seen movies or gone to museums regarding these times. A different angle can make a complete change to a story.

Blog Reflection by Felipe Del Rosario

The creation of the blog this semester was easier. The reflection that I had to do were very interesting and understandable. It was very comfortable for me to write reflection on the blog because I know more about how it works because the semester before this one, I had to do one. The only difference is that the other semester was a little more demanding. The other semester we had to post links and images on every blog. However, even though its not necessary, I recognize that those details made the posts very cool and attractive to the readers eyes. The blog helped me a lot in my learning process because it made me create my own opinion on some themes and it made me analyze works made in class which helped me to understand them better.
The most interesting post of this blog is the graphic work reflection. This is a cool post because on the blog you can post a picture of the comic you and your partners did. Also, it’s cool to post pictures on the entries because it makes them look more attractive to read, even though, it could be a simple entry. Other interesting aspect of this blog is that I can comment on my friends’ posts. This is good because the critiques or opinions can help you become a better writer.
The difference between the blog and the journal wasn’t so marked. In both you can write what you feel or what you think. However, In the first part of the journal, you could write whatever you wanted because it was free writing but, in the blog, you had to write about the theme that it was assigned. The journal was done by pen and this is important for me because I don’t write very good and I can misspell or write ugly in the journal. On the other hand, in the blog the reflections are typed and with the autocorrect of Word, you can correct or know when you misspell something. The second part of the journal (Multi-genre section) was quite interesting because It was a very creative way to compare things from the class to things or events of my life. For example, the work that I liked the most was the letter to the past me.
In this blog, I didn’t add many features to make my blog more interesting. I added an image in the post of the comic. I didn’t put many features because this semester I wasn’t so encouraged to do so. Also, I’m not a fan of decorating things. That’s why most of my works are simple and without decorations.
In conclusion, the blog was easier this semester. Also, I liked more the blog this semester because it was more independent in terms of not having strict dates to the reflections. Also, the stories that I read in my class were very interesting which made the reflection and activities more interactive and unique. This kind of events and activities, like the blog, motivated me take the class with more enthusiasm.

“Getting Ideas for Writing Arguments about Graphic Fiction” by Felipe Del Rosario

Questions & Answers:
ELEMENTS OF FICTION: Does the graphic fiction feature a central character or a set of characters? How does this character or set of characters provide a focal lens for the story?
The graphic fiction features a set of characters but sometimes the story shown is around one character. You can see the difference depending on how many times a character appears in the graphic fiction. This character provides a focal lens for the because of the dialogues he has with the other characters or his actions. Also, most of the time, the character is affected by the problem of the story and its himself who must solve it.
VISUAL ELEMENTS: How do the visual elements of the graphic work together to create the story’s meaning? What are the most important graphic elements being used by the artist to convey the story?
The visual elements work together to create the story’s meaning by creating symbols and metaphors. Some lines or doodles can symbolize things moving. Some visual elements are panels, gutters, captions, dialogue balloons, thought balloons and sound effects. The panels help you go through the story scene by scene. The captions give you a background of the scene. The dialogue balloons and thought balloons makes you understand what the characters thoughts are and even the story’s message. The most important graphic element is the captions and the dialogue balloons because without them it would be difficult to understand the correct message which the author is conveying.
NARRATIVE AND GRAPHIC JUMPS: How does the graphic fiction rely on the readers ability to provide narrative information that is not presented by the words or images on the page? Does the work contain few or many narrative and visual gaps?
The graphic fiction relies a lot on the readers imagination or interpretation to create narrative information that isn’t explicit by making assumptions of what happened between panels. This is better called “jumping the gutter”. A gutter is the blank space between panels. The work not usually have many visual gaps because if it had, it would rely too much on the readers imagination and can lead to not understand the meaning of the graphic work.

GRAPHIC STYLE: 1. How would you describe the style of the graphic work? What seems to be the artist’s signature style?
I would describe the style of a graphic work by the drawings of the illustrations in the panel. I would describe the author’s drawing to describe the style. For me, an artist’s signature style would be a repetitive characteristic of his drawings in different graphic works.

2. How does the style match the story being told? Is the style a good match for the themes and concepts being conveyed by the narrative?
The style matches the story being told because of the colors, shades, darkness, and the smoothness of the drawings. For example, if a story is a scary story, the drawings are going to be dark and with a lot of shades. If a story is a funny story, the drawings would be animated. The style is a good match for the themes and concepts being conveyed because it gives the graphic work and idea of what the mood of the narrative is.

Graphic Fiction Story Reflection of " The Party of the Shapes" by Felipe Del Rosario

This comic is about a bunch of shapes planning a party. Its main character is the circle. The circle gives the idea of throwing a party to the other shapes and they agreed. Also, he was in charge of bringing the drinks to the party while the other shapes had to bring the snacks. Since the circle has the quality of being cheap, he bought just water for the party because it was the cheapest thing in the market. Also, hours before the party, her mom told him to eat before going to the party, but he said that he was going to eat at the party. However, the circle couldn’t eat anything at the party because he was allergic to seafood and every food on the party was made with seafood. In this reflection I’m going to describe and explain the comic, talk about some of the symbols and the meaning of the comic.
In the first two panels, it appears four shapes without faces. These four shapes are a square, a triangle, a cylinder and a circle. In the third panel, it appears a rack with different types of drinks and prices on top of them. Also, the circle appears in it with a shopping cart and some water bottles in it. In the fourth panel, is two circles but one of them is bigger and it has a bow. Also, there’s a circular picture of three circles hanging on the wall. On the fifth panel, there are all the shapes, water and a table with food on it. On the last three panels the circle is present. In the sixth panel is the cylinder with a plate of seafood on a stick. In the seventh panel, there’s the triangle with a plate of triangular sandwiches. In the last panel, there’s a square with a plate of chips and a dip.
In the first two panel, the shapes are divided because that means that the circle is leading the conversation. In addition, in those panels the shapes are planning the party and deciding what each must bring to the party. In the third panel, the circle is selecting the cheapest drink, (which is water) to buy it and bring it to the party. In the fourth panel, the mother of the circle Is talking with circle about eating before the party, but he doesn’t do it. In the fifth panel, the circle arrives to the party with the water and asking for food which the other shapes brought. In the last three panels the cylinder, the triangle, and the square offer the circle some food, but he can’t have to deny everything because its made with seafood and he’s allergic to it.
One of the symbols in the comic is the shape of the dialogue boxes. In the panel three, the dialogue box is in the form of a cloud because its symbolizes that the circle is talking to himself or in his mind. In the panel one and five, the dialogue box is in the form of spikes symbolizing that the message its said with emotion or excitement. Another symbol is the lines of the bottle of water in panel three symbolizing that the bottle is being moved from the rack to the shopping cart. The lines coming out of the circle in panel five, symbolizes yelling or screaming. Another symbol in the comic is the bow in the fourth panel which means that the circle who’s wearing it it’s a feminine circle. In general, the comic has various meanings. The main idea is that being miserly sometimes can cost you and more if you’re not paying attention to the communication between your friends. The conversation with the mother means that when a mother recommends you to do something, the wise thing is to do what she says.
In conclusion, this comic shows how much it can cost you to be stingy. It starts with the circle planning a party with the shapes in which he plans to take advantage of. Its climax is when everyone is offering him food, but he can’t eat any because he’s allergic to it. It ends with the circle having to “eat” water because of not following his mother recommendation and for being cheap and not telling his friends that he’s allergic to seafood.

Blog Reflection

Making this blog was easier than the last time. First, because I made it with my group members and second because I already did one on my own. This time it was easier making the blog, the difficult was posting the reflections and works. All our works were randomly posted and are difficult to find each other works. I wish we could customize more the blog so we can make it our way. It was a good experience working with my partners, we have a lot of fun making the blog. Last time I did the blog I have fun but it wasn’t that fun as the one we did together. It feels like a social media page were everybody works together to achieve something. the more I do this the most I like it. I think that I will make a personal blog, or use the one I create for last semester for my personal use, I don't know for what I'm going to be using it but that's going to come up next time. All I can say right now is that I liked a lot making blogs and maybe I will create a page too.

Journal, Life Compass, and Multigenre Reflection

This semester we have to make another journal for the class. This one needs to have 40 journals and 20 life compasses. I have never written about my life or something that has happened to me in a journal. I have written journals before but they were about specific topics and I have to explain how that affects me or what I know about that topic. This type of writing has changed me a lot because I was able to express myself and I enjoyed what I was writing. I realize that I am always busy and that I need to have a balance between studies and enjoying my life. I am not a fan of writing but I do enjoy it. At the beginning my writing was poor. I didn’t write fluently and I had a hard time finding the correct word to use. But as the time passed and I keep writing journals I noticed that I was able to find the words a lot easier and faster. Also, I was capable to write more because I knew what words I had to use. Sometimes the words I used to use were not written the correct way, but I have improved a little on that.

Writing a journal is one thing, but evaluating your life is something very different. Every time I had to do it, I would think about how I had gone in my day and then evaluate myself. I got used to doing it and although I was getting worse in my way of drawing, it became a habit to do it every day. Last semester we did the same thing but I still not get used to it. I think now that is a great activity because we can evaluate ourselves and see how our day is going. Also, it works for knowing when to make a change. The other half of the notebook was a multigenre section that was for us to make some works, we make three. The first one was covering our notebook with pictures of English and other stuff that we like. The second one was the one I liked the most. We have to make a letter for our younger self. I enjoy that one because it was like a relief of some of the decisions that I take that I was not happy or the ones that I should’ve taken.

Making these three activities really change my mind and help me develop my English. I really feel more confident about how I read, write and speak English. But besides all this activity I have to attribute my learning of English to my hard work and endeavor.

One Act Play Reflection
In the activity of the group play I was able to develop myself in many aspects. Among those aspects, one of the most importants was that I learned to work in a team and in synchronywith others, something very important that will help me a lot in the rest of the classes and during all my life. While acting, I improved in my development and my performance while speaking in front of a public. Also, during the process of preparing the script I stimulate my creativity, originality and fluency of ideas.
My work was about a group of friends who shared a residence. Each one of them came from a different country: Russia, México, and two from the United Stated, one ofe them white and the other african american. The group of friends were very passionate about video games and decided to buy the last game that had come out. After playing it one night, the game disappeared. Each of the friends began to blame each other for stealing it. Then, the discussion went to insults and used the prejudices of nationality to attack each other. After finishing the fight, they asked the lounge administrator and apparently he had found it. Finally, the friends apologized for having insulted and disrespected.
My role in the play was of a young latino named Benjamin. The biggest discussions of my character was with JJ, the african american of the group. When the game was lost, Benjamin and JJ were so mad they both used issues of race and history.  Benjamin referred to JJ as a person of the "hood" because of his skin color and personality, and JJ used the dilemma of the Latin migration to the United States to attack Benjamin. Finally, the two asked for forgiveness for having prejudiced and doubted of the other.
I really liked this activity and I would love to repeat it. It is something that breaks with the monotony of the day to day. I think that every professor should do dynamics like these in all classes, since in addition to stimulating student development, they make classes more entertaining. At the same time we learn, we are enjoying and having fun.
